George A Cooper

George A Cooper:
† Mar 7, 1925 - Nov 16, 2018

To those of a certain generation, he's Mr Griffiths, the school caretaker in 'Grange Hill', but this seemingly unchanging actor played grumpy old gits for forty years in television including 'Billy Liar' (TV), 'Sykes', 'Budgie', 'Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)', 'Rising Damp', 'Bless This House', 'Steptoe & Son' and 'Juliet Bravo'.

On the big screen, he appeared in 'The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer', 'The Bargee', 'Tom Jones', and 'Dracula Has Risen From The Grave'.

In case you were wondering, the 'A' in his name stands for Alphonsus.

  1. He was the boss of the café in the Bless This House film, credited on the IMDB as Mr Wilson, but the name is not mentioned in dialogue.

He was the ironically named "Cooper" in Rising Damp, and was a factory boss or something in Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, one of many characters in the series who gets to with the end of his tether with Mr Spencer.

Cooper was also the Headteacher in the Granada play Roll on Four O'clock, repeated on BBC 2 as part of their Granadaland themed evening in 1992, but first TX in 1970. His last appearance was in Casualty in 1995 as a patient who tried to gas himself in a car.

He is not to be confused with another George A Cooper (born 1916) who was a TV station boss in the 1960s and 1970s, and was involved with Thames and ABC.
